Measure your actual clearance first

Don't guess — lay a rigid tape measure or a ruler flat on the floor and slide it under the bed at its lowest point, not its highest. Check in at least three places: the centre and each end, because frame rails, castors and central support bars often sit lower than the corners suggest. If the bed is on carpet, press the tape down as you would a box rather than measuring over the top of the pile — a deep carpet can eat a surprising amount of your usable gap.

Bed type matters too. Divan beds are the usual culprit: the base often runs almost to the floor, sometimes with a fabric skirt that hides whatever gap there is, and some divans already come with built-in drawers, which is worth checking before you buy anything separate. Metal or wooden frames on legs usually give a more generous 15–25 cm and are outside the scope of this article — if that's your bed, most standard under-bed boxes will already fit without any "low-profile" searching. Futon frames and sofa beds vary hugely and often have a central support bar sitting lower than the side rails, so measure the middle, not just the edges. Platform or floor-style beds typically have no usable gap at all, whatever the listing photos suggest.

What actually slides into 10cm or less

Once you know your real number, matching it to the right product is straightforward. The mistake most people make is buying a box simply labelled "under-bed" without checking its exact height — plenty of "under-bed" ranges are actually 15–20 cm tall and won't go anywhere near a low gap.

Vacuum storage bags

For anything soft — duvets, pillows, out-of-season clothes, spare bedding — vacuum bags are the best answer when your gap is genuinely tight, because fully compressed they can flatten to just a few centimetres. You don't always need a vacuum cleaner: pump bags and roll-and-compress bags (the kind sold for luggage) work by hand if you'd rather not drag the hoover across the bedroom floor. The trade-off is they only suit soft, compressible items — shoes, books and anything boxed need a rigid container instead.

Flat rolling drawers

These are shallow drawer units, sometimes as low as 10–13 cm, built specifically to slide under a low bed and pull out by an integrated handle or on small castors. They're the closest thing to a proper drawer that a low-clearance bed can take, and they earn their keep for anything you want to grab without unzipping a bag first — underwear, socks, everyday folded clothes.

Slimline garment boxes

Flat, wide boxes, often with a clear or mesh lid, designed for folded jumpers, shirts and bedding rather than hanging items. Because they're rigid rather than squishy, they stack more predictably than bags if you've got a little width to spare alongside the bed, and a clear lid means you're not unpacking three boxes to find one jumper.

Low-profile underbed boxes

The general-purpose option — rigid, usually lidded and sometimes on castors, built to a specific low height rather than a standard one. Always check the manufacturer's exact height in centimetres against your measured gap, and leave a margin: a box that's an exact match on paper can still catch on carpet pile or a slightly uneven floorboard.

If there's genuinely nothing under there

Some beds — most divans with a solid skirted base, and most platform frames — just don't give you anything to work with, and no amount of "low-profile" marketing changes that.
